A Tlatoani was the supreme ruler of the ancient Mexicans. The word tlatoani comes from Nahuatl, which is an ancestral language, the root of many others. In Nahuatl "tlatoa" means to speak and the suffix "-ni" is a suffix that indicates "the one." Therefore, tlatoani can be translated as "the one who speaks."
The Tlatoani was the commander-in-chief of the army, the high priest and the supreme judge. In addition, he was responsible for maintaining order and stability.
